I would note that the Simpsons were considered offensive when they started out, but edgier cartoons arrived after they had already pushed the envelope. The South Park kids get up to some pretty wild behavior (from stealing a killer whale to having Scott Tenorman's parents killed and fed to him), but it's so bizarre you can't really imagine yourself in their place. Similarly, most listeners to "Last Caress" or "Kill the Poor" probably don't want to commit infanticide, rape & class genocide through neutron bombs, but get a kick out of the outrageousness of it all. Anybody can riot, "mostly for fun & profit" in Banfield's words, though.

As for songs not celebrating recklessness anymore, I give you Exhibit A. Personally, I prefer the White Barons, but I don't think that's quite your interest.TGGPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11017651009634767649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19346366.post-20874693719975779612010-04-18T11:44:28.559-04:002010-04-18T11:44:28.559-04:00I find your articles about the changes in society ...I find your articles about the changes in society since the 90s interesting, but I think you haven't answered a fundamental question yet: why?

Do you think this change in behaviour is just a natural progression from the 80s or do you think there is an explanation from historical/political/economical facts?arsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19346366.post-73613565976976930362010-04-18T00:14:45.949-04:002010-04-18T00:14:45.949-04:00@ mlm: Twilight = sparkly pretty boys holding han...@ mlm: Twilight = sparkly pretty boys holding hands.
