The Wikipedia articles on stage diving and crowd surfing make it seem like most of the backlash came during the late '90s and especially the 2000s. Guess it had really changed by then.

When I was doing it, it was more like good-natured rough-housing, and more communal, not "Let me take out my anger on everyone else" kind of shit.

I think the girls crowd surfing didn't mind getting touched, as long as it was within the range of what you'd do to pass the person's body on. So, not like repeatedly squeezing her boobs or something weird. But grabbing a little ass, I think that was expected if she went up there. Nothing she wouldn't potentially experience in a horny dance club, you know?

What was Lolapalooza like? I went to the HFStival three or four times, but never made it to Lolapalooza. The all-day summer arena concert, man. What ever happened to them?agnostichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12967177967469961883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19346366.post-17014541524898188022012-06-28T21:02:41.135-04:002012-06-28T21:02:41.135-04:00"I do have fond memories of the social aspect..."I do have fond memories of the social aspect of grunge, though. Those who did body-surf usually got felt up (was that the point?)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19346366.post-7748068385412267032012-06-28T17:43:21.009-04:002012-06-28T17:43:21.009-04:00I'm not listing what I really liked at the tim...I'm not listing what I really liked at the time, but what in hindsight was actually any good. I definitely would not have included any Ace of Base back in the '90s.

I was into grunge for awhile in 7th and 8th grade -- Bleach by Nirvana, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Dinosaur Jr., etc. I don't find any of it memorable, although in a nicer mood I'd include "Lithium" or "Come As You Are".

Even at the time, me and my friends quickly moved away from grunge to somewhat related but better and earlier styles. Flipper, an '80s punk band, sounded pretty grungy but not as navel-gazingly self-aware as '90s grunge. If you just wanted something angry to jump around to, there was Minor Threat, also from the '80s.

Plus hard rock, punk, and metal were still circulating, and it was just too hard to ignore that grunge was wimpy in comparison to AC/DC, the Ramones, Metallia, Priest, Maiden, and so on.

I do have fond memories of the social aspect of grunge, though. It was the last gasp of camaraderie and touchy-feeliness in the youth culture, especially the youth music culture. Shoving each other around in the mosh pit, never seriously. Crowd surfing (even chicks did it back then).

We even stage dived at our school dances when something hard came on -- there'd be two rows of 3 or 4 on each side, clasping hands with the person opposite them. Since we were only leaping off of the cafeteria tables, that was enough of a padding. Kind of a trust game, being caught in your friends arms like that. A couple girls joined us too.agnostichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12967177967469961883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19346366.post-44239851434681064512012-06-28T13:29:23.655-04:002012-06-28T13:29:23.655-04:00How could you be a man and not have loved grunge m...How could you be a man and not have loved grunge music. Except for "Baby One More Time" - though granted, its still better than Britney Spears' later songs, which are completely dehumanized.

I actually think the early 90s represent a cultural highpoint. This could just be nostalgia, cause I was at the age(8-10) when you're first starting to pay attention to music and moviesAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
