The most a dedicated fan can do for an author is to buy a premium version like a hardcover.<br /><br />It isn't about first move advantage. Amazon is a global logistics company like Wal-Mart. Their competitive advantage is using a logistics oligopoly to crush the profit margins out of their suppliers. What they failed to realize is that publishers already operate on thin margins, with a few exceptions like bestsellers and major magazines. And that the midlist authors/editors are in the biz because it's a way to be literary without being molested by a tenure committee.<br /><br />Amazon would do much better to position themselves as a DRM warehouse and wireless distribution service.
